The city operates over 150 facilities, including a multi-purpose civic
center, four neighborhood libraries, a municipal golf course, two ice arenas,
two artificial ice rinks, its own Dearborn Historical Museum complex, 52
baseball and softball fields, 11 soccer fields, eight outdoor swimming pools,
and 29 tennis courts (23 lighted).
Just look at the fitness center at the brand-new Ford Community and
Performing Arts building. In addition to exercise machines and classes, it
offers a rock climbing wall and two swimming pools. One of the pools has a
graded entry, like a beach, for full accessibility for people of all abilities.
Innovation always has been a Dearborn trademark. The city achieved
international acclaim when it purchased a 88-unit retirement complex in
Clearwater, Florida, to complement five senior citizen apartment buildings in
Dearborn. Camp Dearborn, a 626-acre "Citizens' country club" near Milford, is a
one-of-a-kind facility offering family camping, six lakes, a half-mile long
beach, and spacious picnic areas. A new 27- hole golf course was completed in
1997. Dearborn was the first city in Wayne County to implement a recycling
program.
Dearborn also boasts an outstanding elementary and secondary education
system. Its 29 schools, including three public high schools, have an enrollment
of over 16,320. Dearborn Public Schools offer an extensive preschool child care
program as well as advanced education opportunities at Henry Ford Community
College.
Cultural opportunities are an important part of the Dearborn heritage. The
Dearborn Community Arts Council serves as the umbrella for 40 different
performing art groups and operates the Padzieski Art Gallery at the Ford
Community and Performing Arts Center. Citizens actively support 13 service clubs
and more than 300 fraternal, ethnic, veteran, religious, and social
organizations.
You can earn a two- or four-year college degree, receive technical training
or just take classes for personal enrichment, all without ever leaving the
Dearborn city limits.
You also won’t need to leave the city to find full-service health care. Your
options include a health care system and hospital with 50 years experience
serving Dearborn, and a campus of one of the nation’s leading health care
providers, with physician specialists and a 24-hour emergency room. |
